New Mystery Photo

Great Guesses

You all are the most fun! Love the guesses and I have to admit that I'm glad I did finally trick a few of you with my mystery picture. I still think it sort of looks like a fish head and NOBODY guessed anything near that. But somebody did guess a caterpillar under snow. That has to be the most creative guess so far although the yellow snow the result of a polar bear passing by was certainly very interesting!! Or at least, entertaining. 

We actually had snow Saturday here. I happened to be out of state visiting my daughter in a state to the south and missed it, but wow, the photos I saw on Facebook were gorgeous. Still, I didn't see any of polar bears in our area. LOL. Thank goodness!!

There were also guesses of Angel Food or lemon sponge cake and one of you simply guessed a lemon. I can see all those guesses. I liked the one where you suggested the pineapple was floating in a bowl of punch for a baby boy shower. A baby boy because of the blue, I'm sure. 

The Rest of the Picture

As you can see from the "rest of the picture" posted here, many of you were right when you guessed pineapple. That was a nice plate of fruit I got at Bistro Restaurant inside JosephBeth Bookstore last week. I had one of those doctor appointments where they order you to skip breakfast. So, I mostly went in to get a cup of tea for a bit of a caffeine fix at the Bistro, To my distress, they were out of black tea. So I settled for fruit. I need to carry tea bags in my purse the way my agent does. She orders a cup of hot water and then brings out a sleeve of tea bags. I would have been happy with one plain old Lipton bag. What some of you thought looked like "snow" in the picture is actually sugar I sprinkled on the fruit. A little sugar always makes things better. :) And a cup of black tea! Of course, just getting to go to the bookstore is a treat. 

On to the Next Challenge

So now on to the next challenge. Know what the picture up top is? If the first guesser gets this one, I may throw in the towel and give up on ever tricking you all!! My daughter and son-in-law kept suggesting I take a picture of this or that to make into a mystery photo while I was visiting them this weekend. I did not take this one in SC. That's the only hint I'm giving you. You don't need hints. You always guess right!

But right or wrong, a guess or even a "what in the world is that" gets you another entry into my drawing for one of my books and a grab bag book by a different author. Remember, if you are overseas, you can only win an e-book. You have to be 18 to enter. Feel free, however, to enlist the help of your kids in the guessing fun to figure out the photos. Another Mystery Picture to Guess

Here's the new mystery picture. We'll see if I can be a tad trickier this time than last time. I was trying to be tricky last time, but obviously I missed the mark on that. I had no idea that all of you were country girls like me who knew your wood.
 
 
Here is the picture nearly all of you figured out. And then the rest of the picture. I was imagining you seeing canyons and who knows what else. But most of you saw exactly what it was. A slice of tree trunk. Still, it's pretty neat, don't you think? I spotted it on my walk last week. A little bit of a tree sawed down and deserted. No fire made with it. 

When I was a kid, one of my chores was to carry in loads of wood and stack it on the back porch for the woodstove. Helped develop my muscles. Even after I married, we burned wood for heat until a few years ago when my husband developed allergies. Nothing like the warmth of wood heat. Sitting by a fire, reading a book, drinking a cup of tea. Simple pleasures.

I've got all of you who made a guess on the last picture entered in the giveaway for one of my books and another grab bag book. Remember, I'm picking three winners on February 1, 2015. Can You Guess the Mystery Photo?

My plan was to post this early, but best laid plans. Sigh. I just have to admit it. I'm a burn the midnight oil writer. But tonight I have excuses. Really!! First we had a fellowship supper at church. I had to cook something. You can't go to a potluck supper with an empty dish, now can you? I took my zucchini mess. Doesn't that sound delicious? Actually it is pretty good and easy to make and uses up some of those plentiful zucchinis. I also made bread sticks, but somebody else brought yummy garlic Texas toast, so my bread sticks mostly went begging. That's the thing about potlucks. You never what kind of luck you're going to have, but at our church our pots are usually pretty lucky. Then I took some green beans fresh from the garden. 

That's the other reason I'm late tonight. I had to can the rest of those green beans when I got home from church. My canner holds seven quart jars. I had enough beans for six quart jars. I didn't want to do a less than full canning, so even though it was almost dark I hurried out to the garden to see if I could find one more quart of beans. While I was out there a neighbor came over to ask me something about my mom. Her mother is going to be moving into the room that my mother was in at The Lantern. What are the odds of that? Two women who were neighbors for over sixty years ending up living in the same room of a memory care facility. She said her mother is settling in well. So that was good news. But that slowed down the bean picking. Her grandsons were with her and they each had a baby rabbit. Talk about temptation! That got Oscar's nose twitching. He had just chased a rabbit out of the backyard and then these kids bring a couple over. I warned them not to drop those babies! Oscar's a good dog, but he is a dog.

Then my ancient canner leaked steam and I had to start over. Have I whined enough? LOL. But the beans are processed. The new mystery photo is posted up top. 

I hope this one isn't as easy as some of you found the last one. You can't imagine how tickled I was when one of you finally made a wrong guess. It's not as much fun when you all know the answer. And I really thought that picture would be hard. But obviously, quite a few of you have been to the zoo. No fooling you. It is a polar bear under water. But it could have been a white dog underwater the way a few of you guessed. Except I don't have an underwater camera and have a thing about keeping my head above the water. Here's the rest of the photo. The mystery photo was the bear's nose breathing out bubbles. I took the picture last year after the St. Jude Walk at the Louisville Zoo and see, Peggy, there is a grandkid. :) 

So now you can guess on the new picture. Remember, it's more fun if you guess first and then look at what everybody else has already guessed. They could be wrong, you know. They weren't last time, but they could be this time! Maybe I'm just not mysterious enough.

Mystery Picture Giveaway Fun

Are you ready for a new giveaway? I've got books that want a new home. The prize is an autographed copy of Karen Kingsbury's The Chance and the winner's choice of one of my books shown in the photo below. And you can have my autograph too. Mine is sort of plain compared to Karen's interesting autograph. She must have taken lessons from her doctor, but I saw her sign it. So I know it's hers. lol. 

To enter, all you have to do is make a guess about what the picture is. It's more fun if you don't read everybody's guesses until after you make yours. Besides, they might be wrong. Besides again, you will be entered in the drawing whether you're right or wrong. The guessing is just for fun. 

I can't decide whether this mystery picture is too easy or not. I guess we'll see. I'll post another mystery picture on Wednesday and if you guess on that one too then you'll have an extra entry in the giveaway. I'll announce the winner on next Sunday's post (August 3). Fun with Mystery Photos

I hope you've been having fun with my mystery photos.Wednesday's photo stumped most of you. Maybe because it was sort of fuzzy after I snipped out the little bit to try to trick you. Take one last guess and then look down a few paragraphs to see the "rest of the picture." 
 


A New Photo to Guess
 
Here's a new photo bit to guess. This one might be easier for you all. But whether you get the guess right or wrong, you still get another entry in the giveaway to increase your chances of being a winner in my book giveaway. What makes us happy? Is happiness the same as joy?The dictionary says joy is a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. You know that kind of feeling you have when the person you love says they love you too. Or when you hold your first grandchild. Or when you see a flash of a bluebird's wings. Or a crocus bursting out of the ground at the end of a long winter. Or when you're singing your favorite hymn and the words are just as meaningful on the hundredth sing through as the first. Or when you get the news that something you wrote is finally going to be published. 

Joy! It sings in your heart. Makes you smile when you are all alone. Makes your feet feel like dancing. Sometimes you feel so joyful you have to release some of the sparkle of joy into the air by moving. You might clap your hands, twirl around, 
jump in the air or do cartwheels. Joy can explode. 

Summer of Joy

That's the kind of feeling I wanted readers to think about when they saw the title of my third Heart of Hollyhill book. I originally titled the story Sunflowers of Joy. No real reason except I love sunflowers and I wanted that joy to make an appearance in the story. But the publishers tweaked the title a little and came up with Summer of Joy. I like that title too although most of the story happens in the winter and spring. Even so, the title invites us to think about a summer full of joy. And that sounds fabulous.

Oh, yeah, and see those little records. That's the mystery picture from Wednesday. Amy guessed records among other things and Linda guessed it was from the cover of Orchard of Hope, but she may have meant Summer of Joy and had the titles mixed up. Thanks for all the guesses. Sunday's Mystery Photo

And for those of you who haven't guessed on Sunday's mystery photo, here it is again. Take one last look and guess before I reveal the rest of the photo below. I will tell you that I've tricked most of you on that picture, many more of you than I expected to. I'll post one more mystery photo Sunday and then on Wednesday, the 19th, I'll draw for winners (2) of my book, Summer of Joy (or winners can choose one of my other titles) and a grab bag book by a different Christian author. I'll offer the winners a choice of several titles. Maybe one by Dani Pettrey or Julie Klassen. 

The Mystery of Ideas

Do you ever wonder where writers come up with ideas? That is one of my most asked questions when I'm giving a book talk. Where do I get my ideas? It's a hard question to answer since sometimes I don't know exactly where the ideas come from. When I'm beginning a new story, I start with just the germ of an idea. Usually a "what if" question. 

The Heart of Hollyhill's What If Question

The Heart of Hollyhill series started with a question something like this "What if I had a young girl whose father was a preacher and whose mother had deserted the family years earlier?" Of course that was just the beginning. But from that question, all the other questions about what happened next came - through three books. 

Some parts of the idea can be tracked down to their origins. The part about David, my preacher character, not being able to get a church after his wife left him came from my own pastor's experience. He lost his pastorate at a church when his wife left him and for several years was unable to find a church that would let him preach even though his wife had been unfaithful to him and insisted on the divorce. 

Then I pulled a lot of the setting for the books from what I remembered my little town being like in the 1960s. If you take part in the The Book Club Network, www.bookfun.org, you can check out a special giveaway about Summer of Joy there beginning March 25. I just finished doing a piece that will be posted by Nora on TBCN about how I based the setting for my Hollyhill books on my own small town and my own country church. 

But there were also things that either grew out of the story and just suddenly came to mind in a way that's a mystery to me. Wes from Jupiter for one. I didn't plan Wes when I was trying to come up with the plot of the book, but I'm certainly glad his spaceship hit that air bump and he landed in Hollyhill. That probably sounds really crazy if you haven't read Scent of Lilacs, but Wes tells Jocie Jupiter stories to keep from revealing his past. Other story events are equally as hard to explain, but it's just what happened when my character came to life in my imagination.

You are all going to be surprised, but there was only one correct answer and she was sure she was going to be wrong. So Donna, you can laugh, but because you were right and not wrong. Popcorn, cotton, and cotton candy were what most of you guessed. But here's the rest of the picture so you can see. Baby chicks waiting to be sold at Tractor Supply. A very springtime photo. Can't you almost hear them cheeping?

Mystery Photos in Spring

Do you like mysteries? I like reading them. Not sure I'd actually want to be involved with one although when I was a kid I imagined being like the Hardy Boys and solving all sort of mysteries. Now I'm happy when I can solve the mystery of my missing keys or what happened to that letter I just had in my hand and laid down somewhere a minute ago. Of course, that might not be such a mystery if my desk wasn't such a mess. 

Fun Guesses

For some of you my mystery picture wasn't much of a mystery. For others of you, the picture had you doing some creative thinking. Love the yellow boots and sleds in the snow guesses, and you know, that snow does look like soapsuds or maybe ice in a cooler. A few of you saw a fence and bananas. Right color. Wrong object. The best wrong guess was Kristy's idea of a book in one of those yellow plastic bags that the telephone company uses when they pitch out the new telephone books by our mailboxes. I could see that. But, as you can see in the "rest of the picture" above, those of you who said a daffodil or jonquil, as we always called them when I was growing up, in the snow were right.

Spring is Springing

Here in Kentucky, spring is going to give us a little preview next week with temperatures in the sixties. Official spring is about 10 days away, but usually spring sneaks into Kentucky early. Not so much this year. However, Daylight Savings Time did show up earlier than it used to. That will make the days feel longer even though they're still the same twenty-four hours.

Mystery Photo Contest - New Chance to Win

You know I just remembered last week that I've celebrated every Hollyhill book with a giveaway involving a mystery photo. So I can't let the re-release of Summer of Joy slide by without some of the same kind of fun. So here's mystery photo number 1. I'll post another one or maybe two on Sunday. If you want to be in the running for the prize of one of my Heart of Hollyhill books and a book by another Christian author (How about a choice between a Dani Pettrey book or a Julie Klassen book?), just leave a guess or a comment saying you have no idea. Either will work as an entry. Each new mystery photo I post will give you the chance to guess again and get another entry into giveaway.

Last time I did this, you guys were great at guessing. So since some of you are so smart, it will be more fun for everybody if you guess first and read the comments second. No fair changing your guess then! :) We'll play this mystery photo game for a couple of weeks, so the deadline for entries (comments on one of my blog posts) will be March 18. You have to be eighteen to enter, and please do remember to leave a way to contact you. I had several entries in my last blog contest that didn't leave a way to send them a message.

I've heard from all my winners (Jocie still hasn't heard from the winner on the Heart of Hollyhill blog) and will be sending out the prizes by the end of the week. I also got a couple of great ideas for what I can ask for my Love Comes Home Celebration coming up in June. But first I'll have to come up with prizes.

I'm going to do a Book Talk at the Casey County Public Library Thursday, March 6. If you're in the area, come on out and we'll talk books together. I love libraries. I owe a lot of my writing success to libraries. First, the books I was able to check out when I was a kid fed my love of stories. I would have never been able to read so much without those weekly trips to the library. Second, when I started writing, the library was a gold mine of resources both about writing and about the historical events I wrapped my stories around. There was no internet then. If you wanted to know something, you went to the library and looked it up. And I was blessed with the most helpful librarian ever, Ann McWilliams. She even made me appreciate my name more. Said she liked being plain Ann, and so I thought maybe I should too.

Libraries are no longer just books and card catalogs. Now there are banks of computers and movies and audio books and kids programs. I like that a library can supply so many resources for a community. At the same time, I don't visit the library as often as I used to. I have a huge stack of books waiting for me to have time to read them. I do some of my research on the computer and some from books I own. But I know the library is there when and if I come up with a different idea. Then I'll go search through the card catalog that is now on computer and carry home a pile of books.

Guessing Games, Imagination, and Shaker Book Winners

I love games that take imagination. Guessing games can be fun too. So thank all of you who have played along with my mystery photos to enter my giveaway for Orchard of Hope. I'm not quite as mysterious as I'd hoped to be with these photos.
I thought the one last Wednesday would be a real puzzler and what did all of you say? Flower. And all of you were right! However, only a few of you knew what KIND of flower. It is a passion flower. They are strange little blooms. One of Mom's sitters brought it show Mom one night this summer. I'm totally amazed by the bloom from its strange little skinny petals to its merry-go-round center.The amazing gifts of nature.

I really didn't plan to do any more mystery pictures, but since I'm not drawing for the winners of Orchard of Hope until Saturday, I said why not. You may be bored with the game, but I'm determined to stump some of you!! I probably won't. You guys are just too smart and good at figuring things out.  

I did finally contact the winners of the Shaker books which was the bonus prize I offered during the Christian Fiction Scavenger Hunt. I hope if you took part in that you had fun and maybe won a prize on one of the posts. My winners are Pam of CA and Katie of FL who both chose The Believer. The third winner was Linda of CA who picked The Gifted. I do appreciate all of you telling me what you liked about the scavenger hunt and leaving comments on Lyn's guest post here on the 18th. I read every comment, but was unable to answer every one after the 400 plus message started giving my computer a headache. :) Computers with headaches are not nice to be around.

One More Puzzling Picture

So to twist the quote a bit, what in the world is it? Are you tired of mystery photos yet? I hope not. I thought I'd do one more to let you keep guessing to perhaps win that copy of the newly packaged Orchard of Hope. I think Jocie and Wes would have had fun guessing on these mystery pictures too. Maybe I'll let Jocie come up with some sort of puzzle for her Hollyhill Book of the Strange blog. Jocie likes puzzles. Did you see her post about Beatlemania. Do you remember that? I do. I never swooned or screamed, but I sure did like singing "I Want to Hold Your Hand." Not exactly the greatest song ever written, but it grabbed our attention, didn't it?











But here is the rest of the picture of last Wednesday's mystery photo. Several of you were right on the money with your caterpillar guesses. You even told me exactly what kind of caterpillar and that they were tomato horn worms that becomes a sphinx moth. The bubbles that I thought were so neat were actually deadly to the poor caterpillar according to the info Kathleen found for us. Here's the last bit to explain the bubbles. (Not sure about her source.) "Here's this handy tidbit, if needed: Find out what kind of bug you have: Is it a good bug or a bad bug? Keep a look out for little caterpillar/worm like pests and spray or squish them. The only exception that I can bring to mind would be a tomato hornworm (green caterpillar) -- if it has a bunch of bubbles on its back, it is infected by a beneficial wasp that will eliminate a few generations of the hornworms. Leave them. They are on the way out anyway." 

You readers teach me so much. But now let's see what you teach me about the mystery picture up top. Oh yeah, and I loved your guesses on the last one - garden hose, cabbage leaves, lime halves, cactus leaves.  You were using your imaginations. Thanks for giving it a try.

Mysteries and a Winner Revealed

 Those mystery photos turned out to be a lot of fun for me. The guesses were very creative. Most all of you got the first photo right. But Sarah said the one thing she was sure of is that it wasn't a fence. I guess she thought I'd be sneakier than that. Judy guessed that it was a fence and a book cover. So she was seeing "the whole picture." It's the picket fence on the cover of my coming Shaker Christmas novel, Christmas at Harmony Hill. That little dab of red must have given it away to Judy. 

The guesses you made for photo two were the most fun. Here's some of them: peach, two dogs or cats lying next to one another, a purple cone flower, a horse's back end, an elephant's back end (somebody thought I was brave to take that photo, but I can sort of see that elephant), a cow's tongue, and then those of you who must have been licked by plenty of dogs' tongues and recognized Oscar's tongue. It might have been a bit more mysterious than most dogs' tongues because Oscar's tongue has those black splotches. Fun guesses all and got my imagination going seeing what you were seeing. Having a hard time seeing that peach, though.  

And now the last picture. It fooled most of you, but a few of you got it right. There were some interesting guesses on this one too. Sandi guessed those buckeye shells like the photo I posted on my Facebook page not long ago. Great guess, Sandi, but wrong! It's a walnut. One person said she could almost smell it.  Black walnut outer shells have a very strong odor.

Tonight things are difficult as I'm at Mom's house and the modem here decided to give up the ghost. Finishing this on my iPhone. So please forgive the centered type. I have no idea how to fix that.
